Hey, so I just wanted an honest opinion of what my chances at applying to Stanford and getting in as an REA would be. Here are the stats below:
ACT: 34 (composite score)
SAT: 2160 (superscored; reading: 630, math: 780, writing: 750) [I've taken the old SAT twice. Do you think I should take the new SAT once and have a total of three SAT scores + 1 ACT score or is that too much for Stanford?]
GPA: 4.05 (weighted; my school doesn't do unweighted)
Class rank: My school does not do this either

As a sophomore, 2nd place in the Asia-Pacific International meet, 2nd place in our version of nationals, 4th place in finals/our version of regionals
As a junior, 1st place in the Asia-Pacific International meet, 1st place in our version of nationals, 1st place in finals/our version of regionals (This was known as the triple crowd and hasn't been done before)
I'll be the captain next year.

As a junior & senior: Well I guess we'll see then huh?
Clubs: Animal Advocates
Leader for two years as freshman & sophomore
Head leader next year as a senior
What we have done: We have discovered a "dog shelter" that was actually an excuse for a lady to hoarde dogs, raised awareness, were desperately trying to get the dogs out of there, got a newspaper company to investigate as well as the police. Unfortunately the shelter is just barely surviving and we have been forced out of the issue by our head of school...Not very happy about this. We also have a WWF homepage and of course have been volunteering. This year we had a voluntary trip to help out at a huge shelter up at Osaka.
NHS for half of my sophomore (when you can get inducted), junior, and senior year
Leader of one of the sub clubs within
EC: iGem team which is basically part of a synthetic biology competition up in Boston. First iGem team in our school
SAT Subject tests:
Math II taken as a sophomore: 750
Planning to take 3 more this year and then one more beginning of senior year
AP:
AP World: 4
Planning to take 5 this upcoming year
Common App Essay:
Planning to talk about the Japanese gender stigma, its connecting to my family (It's disgusting), and how I would like to change it. I did an AP seminar project on this so I'm pretty invested in this issue.
Thanks guys! And please tell me if I should take the SAT again in the beginning of my senior year!

What are my chances?

transfer to Stanford
If I attend community college is there any possibility of me getting into Stanford. When I was in hs I was accepted to UCLA but do to a medical condition I had to withdraw. I now want to work hard and try to get into Stanford. Does anyone have any advice for me?
↧
↧
Are my chances shot with a downward trend in GPA?
I'm pretty certain that by the end of junior year I will end up with at least 3.8 cumulative GPA (3 B+'s) , and in sophomore year I got one B+. I might be setting myself for further discouragement here, but can anyone provide some advice on how I can still appeal to the admissions committee?

How does Stanford's quarter system affect internship opportunities?
I know that Harvard and MIT students can take 3-4 week internships over winter break (usually at tech/finance companies), as Harvard’s break extends 3 weeks into January, and MIT has the 4-week IAP. I like the idea of taking winternships for experiencing two different company cultures during the year (one summer, one winter).
Stanford, however, has a much shorter winter break that ends the first week of January. I’d assume that no company has a winternship program that fits Stanford’s schedule. So my questions to Stanford students / alums are:
1. Do you feel disappointed about the lack of winternship opportunities? How do you make up for it?
2. How often do Stanford students take a quarter off for an internship?
3. How often do Stanford students take part-time jobs (while classes are in session) at the nearby tech companies?

Stanford ED and RD
I read that Stanford had the lowest ED admit. so I am thinking the RD will be 90% of admit???
any thoughts??? and got a few rejects, but today I got in USC... very happy..
but my 1st choice is yet to come in....

How good is Stanford's undergrad in Economics/Political Science?
Hi! I was admitted through the RD program and I am still floored by actually getting in. I've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews about Stanford's undergrad and so wanted to ask you guys how it really is compared to other top schools. I'm looking to double major in Economics and Political Science (or history, since I LOVE history), and (maybe) apply to Law/Business School after undergrad. So, how is the quality of education? Would a degree from Stanford be worth a lot when applying to grad schools after undergrad? I also know that it does not just depend on the degree but also research opportunities and internships and the like. So how are the opportunities and networking?
Thanks!

Viewing Stanford Financial Aid
I was ecstatic when I saw yesterday that I was accepted into Stanford. However, I can't see my financial aid package even after making a SUNet ID and logging into Axess. After logging into Axess, I only have a "STARS" tab and don't have a "student" tab. Nothing on the Axess homepage seems like it would be able to show me my financial aid. Does anyone else have this problem? Has anyone accepted from RD been able to view their Stanford financial aid? Thanks!

Ask a current student anything!
Congrats to all those admitted today (and earlier this year) and good luck to those who will be pursuing other options!
I'm currently a student at Stanford and willing to answer questions anyone might have. Any other Stanford students/alums here feel free to chime in - keep in mind this is only one student's experience and knowledge.
MODERATOR'S NOTE:
Any student/alum/parent/friend is also welcome to answer questions here.

Stanford MS&E
So somehow I was accepted RD to Stanford (still trying to figure out how lol).
Looking over their majors their management science and engineering program seemed ideal for me as someone who is interested in finance and technology (I applied to Penn's Jerome Fisher ED but was deferred). So I was just wondering whether anyone here who currently goes to Stanford or has experience with this program could talk about the quality of the courses and teaching compared to other engineering majors and compsci majors at Stanford. Is it more of a laid back engineering major or are the students in it just as driven as the other, I'm guessing more popular, majors. How does it compare to say Penn's program or Princeton's ORFE? Also Internships/job placements as these matter to me a lot too.
Thanks a lot for any input!

Axess Financial Aid Viewing Award
When I sign into Axess and go to the View Financial Aid section, it tells me that I have "No self-service access for this aid year". When I click Award Letters, it tells me that there are no award letters. Does this mean I got 0 financial aid, or are they not done with my aid package?

Why Stanford?
Last friday, I was accepted to Stanford as an RA admit. I wasn't expecting to get in at all so I've done minimal research on the school, though I do know that it has programs in both physics and geophysics, so it's definitely on the table.
Less recently, I was admitted to Caltech and MIT. Between the three schools, I currently favor Caltech for its size, academic environment, rigor, and pure-science focus. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about Stanford to evaluate whether I could thrive there, so I'm not sure if my comparative lack of interest stems just from a sheer lack of knowledge? From what I've seen, though, it seems that Stanford works better for students pursuing careers in economics or engineering than pure science; how much truth is there to that? What resources are there for undergraduates to do research? How rigorous are their programs?
For those of you who chose Stanford, what led you to make that choice? I never thought I'd have to make this decision, so any input is appreciated.

How different is Stanford from its East Coast counterparts?
I'm a native East Coaster (Bostonian) used to frigid weathers and thick layers. I'm wondering how different Stanford is from its East Coast counterparts (MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton) and if I will have a difficult time fitting in here. Also, what if we aren't into the whole Silicon Valley tech scene (I find some parts of it to be kinda BS)?
thanks!
