I'm currently deciding whether to apply to MIT and Caltech ea or to Stanford. I'm almost completely sure I'm going to major in CS, but I'm interested in mechanical/electrical engineering as well.
I really can't decide between MIT and Stanford because I do want a more rigorous curriculum (which MIT has) but I also like the startup culture of Stanford and its proximity to Silicon Valley (I'd like to join a major tech company or start my own, and I think an internship with one of these companies before graduation would be helpful.)
I don't really care about climate, social life, etc. What would you recommend and do you all know of any resources that could help me make the decision?

Would this competitive summer program help for CS at Stanford or other similar colleges?
I understand the admission is a crap shoot and very competitive even for the students with top credentials. But wondering, if this competitive summer program boosts credentials for a computer science major at Stanford. Students have well above credentials including GPA, SATs scores and great essays and recommendation etc. If not, what about similar competitive colleges like CMU, Harvard, Princeton etc.

Advice for Prospective Music Major
I am a high school senior, and I have decided to apply to colleges as a music major but have not finalized my college list yet. I play the viola at school and also at CODA and SCSBOA for the past three years, but I don't have any awards from competitions. I started playing viola a little late and I'm not the most talented violist at my school. At all state I sat near the middle of the orchestra. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which schools I would have a good shot at getting into. I would prefer medium to large campuses. So far I'm considering U Michigan, UCLA, Northwestern, and Boston University. Will these schools be a reach for me?

Are you bound to a major?
Hi,
I have a questions about majors. If you fill out major X as your intended major on the common app, are you bound to that major if you decide to change to major Y once you attend? In what ways would it be different if you had already listed major Y rather than X as your intended major on the common app? I thought you don't declare your major until sophomore or junior year. Also, I've heard people say it's hard to transfer majors, what do they mean by that? What if the major is in the same college (say the engineering college)?
Thank you guys so much for your help! :)

No reply from neither the general undergraduate admissions office nor my regional admissions officer
Hello all,
Approximately 6-7 weeks ago, I sent an e-mail to UAO briefly explaining my situation and asking about something that I couldn't find any CERTAIN answer to. Question was if I could assign my old guidance counselor whom I spent 3 years with during high school. But this year, I'm changing my school and I don't think it would be logical for my current guidance counselor to write the report, as she has literally no idea about me. If I assign my old guidance counselor, I also told them that she will provide my latest transcript. I couldn't get any e-mail so I sent another one to my regional admissions officer nearly 3-4 weeks ago. And she didn't reply either. I know we won't get any response to questions that are already answered on website, but there was no information about this whatsoever. Should I be worried that they simply don't care about me :P or is this how long it takes usually?

Does getting a Stanford interview mean anything?
I recently found a post on Quora in which a Stanford interviewer states that getting an interview means that an applicant is under "serious consideration." I am from a small town in the northeast and was recently contacted for a Stanford interview. Is this a good sign, or am I simply grasping at straws?

Stanford ACT Score
I’m applying to Stanford which requires all SAT and ACT scores to be send. I’m taking my subject tests in October and I got a 1560 on the SAT, but I only got a 30 on the ACT with as low as a 26 in science (it was a really bad test day). I’ve taken the SAT twice with a 1510 and a 1560 but I only took the ACT once. I don’t have enough time before Stanford early application to take the ACT again. Should I try and delete the ACT score or would that violate Stanford’s rules? Or if they found out from say my transcript or some obscure place that I took the ACT and deleted the score, would that destroy my chances of admission? If I don’t delete the score will my chances be lowered for Stanford or any Ivy League school and by how much (yes I know Applications are reviewed holosticially but it no doubt lowers by chances by some amount)? Thank you for your help

Should I submit an arts supplement?
Arts including visual, performing, theatre, etc. Specifically, I'm reconsidering if I should submit a music supplement to Stanford. I know I am a decent player that could probably be an average violin player at the state level, but I realize that I am by no means "extraordinary." My teacher has already completed a recommendation for me, and I have spent some hours completing and editing a resume but now I am starting to think that my supplement would probably add nothing if not hurt my application. Can anyone add any insight to this?

Chances of Stanford?
Hey everyone,
I'm new to this forum, a junior in high school, and I really want to get into Stanford. I'm looking for some help, mainly advice on what I should do based on my current academic achievements, etc, and what I should work on.
1st, I'm not really exceptional exceptional in any way as in a way to get into Stanford. I keep hearing about how you have to do something really "special" to get in, and I havent done anything like that really.
2nd, I'm homeschooled.
In my 10th grade I took the PSAT and got a 1450, not sure how things will roll this year.
I only have 4 APs taken total, 2 5's and 2 4's, will be taking around 4 or 5 more in my junior year this year.
I'm aiming for an SAT score of 1550, not sure if thats achievable given my academic intellectual ability.
Almost all my classes are honors or APs, so technically I have a weighted GPA of 4.8 approximately, but not sure if Stanford will notice that since I'm homeschooled.
I have an 800 in Physics 1 and 800 in Math 2.
I dont do very well in competitions,.
I dont do many extracirriculars, Im pretty good with Physical Ed (weightlifting and cardio), good at basketball.
The majors I'm interested in are Business, Math, and Physics.
The one thing that is cool is that I got 7th place in North America playing Clash Royale in the CCGS Spring 2017 tournament. I won $3000 through that, will that help me at all?
Ive earned around $2000 through tutoring and my own basketball class, and I work at Chik Fil A around 12 hours a week.
So thats basically it. Nothing special or glamorous (besides my inflated GPA lol), should I work on anything in particular or try to work on my passion and build a business or something like that?
Thanks Joseph

Question of fairness with the way Stanford gives credits on language fluency
I am posting this question so I can receive some input on this issue so I can better understand the rationale behind Stanford's policy on this issue and whether some people think it should be changed. Please note that I start with a premise that a private college can generally implement its own policy on giving credits because if I don't like it, we don't have to attend Stanford, but this does not mean the policy should not be changed if it's not "fair". I also realize the concept of "fairness" is not cut and dry, so I guess I would like your opinions on whether you think my "wish" is fair? Or am I missing something in my analysis?
Here is our situation. First, I noticed that a Stanford bound STEM interested prospective freshmen can receive up to approximately 40 to 50 Quarter credits based on AP test scores (not SAT Subject test scores) but it is very difficult for non-STEM bound proofs to receive many credits in advance. Our kid received a score of 5 on AP Spanish test, and we were happy because this meant that our kid could not only waive out of Stanford's language requirement but also receive 10 Quarter Credits because according to Stanford's AP Credits policy, a score of 5 on AP Spanish test will automatically give him 10 Quarter Credits (in Spanish). But our kid is fluent in another language (he lived in that country for 9 years so he grew up speaking that language (let's call this Language A) and is close to fluent in every aspect) even though he did not take any classes and there is no AP test for this particular language. However, he could have taken IB test for this language but IB test is available to only those students who took IB classes for this particular language. However, our kid's high school is not IB school, and does not offer IB classes. Our kid also received a score of 800 in the SAT Subject Test in Language A.
Questions:
1. Is the AP test score of 5 not "equivalent" to SAT Subject Test score of 800? Is the reason why AP Test score is used over SAT Subject Test score because AP Test measures one's language ability more accurately?
2. If a student is fluent in a language offered at Stanford and Stanford even offers many classes in that language, shouldn't the student be able to receive Credits by getting tested at Stanford's Language Center when AP Test for that language is not offered by the College Board? I even wrote the College Board and asked them why AP Test is not offered for that language when that language is offered at many colleges now days. No response. But it's probably due to the demand and supply issue. (Note that I do understand where Stanford does not have the facility or skilled staff to test a student's ability in a particular language, it would be unreasonable to ask Stanford to test the student's language ability, but I already verified that Stanford possesses both the facility and skilled staff to test students in this particular language. I guess I find it weird that when my kid is more fluent in Korean language than Spanish, he is able to receive 10 Quarterly Credits for Spanish but he cannot receive any Credits for Korean language because no AP Test is offered, even when he is willing to take a language test offered by Stanford Language Center showing that he possesses fluency in Korean language that is equivalent or higher to AP Test score of 5. Note he already received a score of 800 on SAT Subject Test (I know receiving 800 does not mean he's fluent), but 800 on SAT Subject Test might mean he can receive a score of 5 on AP Test -- not sure.
3. Hypothetically, if the College Board starts to offer the AP Test in Language A one or two years from now on, should the student be allowed to take the AP Test and get a score of 5 and be given 10 Quarter Credits?
After typing all this, I feel that it would be more helpful to disclose Language A: Korean language. Note Stanford offers many Korean language classes and the Korea has been even added to the sub-region of the East Asian International Relations Major along with China and Japan.

High School Classes to Take
Hello everyone, I'm going into my Sophomore year of high school this September, and my dream school is Stanford!
I feel like I am preparing myself fairly well - I've been teaching coding at my local elementary and middle schools, I've worked on projects with representatives from M.I.T., I've gotten straight A's both semesters of my freshman year, I am on the Varsity Dance team, writing, etc. Although I know none of these activities guarantee me anything, the point is that I am working very hard to achieve my goal. At the moment, my biggest problem is knowing which courses to take. My freshman year I took:
Honors English
Geometry
Biology
Dance
AP Human Geography
French 3-4
Here are the classes I have planned for my next 3 years:
Sophomore: Honors English
Alg 2 Honors
Chemistry
AP Capstone/AP Seminar
AP World History
French 5-6
Junior: AP English
Math Analysis Honors
AP Biology (Or should i take honors physiology?)
AP Capstone yr 2/AP Research
APUSH
French 7-8
Senior: AP Eng Lit
AP Stats (or should I take AP Calc AB?)
AP Physics
Journalism
AP Gov't
AP French
I have already taken Health and Art History over the summer
Current GPA (weighted): 4.18
So far, I am having the most trouble deciding whether or not to take Calculus- I am not the best at math, and although I have been able to get A's, it's just not my favorite subject. Some people say it is better to only take APs in subjects that interest you, some say take them all to show that you strive to learn. How essential is an AP Calc class, and what does it look like if I haven't taken one. I am also not completely sure which science classes to take, because again, not my favorite subject. Last but not least, is Journalism a good elective for senior year? English and Writing are my strong suits, and I would like to major in Communications with a minor in Business.
please, if anyone has any suggestions at all about which classes I should take, I would greatly appreciate it.

SAT subject scores
Hi, I recently took two SAT subject testsin September. I got a 780 on Bio M (which I'm really happy with) but I got a 720 on Math 2 (which sucks)....I've already sent them to Stanford but I contemplating sending them to other schools. Does the 720 really look that bad? Any advice?

Academic Profile of Stanford's Recruited Athletes
Hi all,
I'm wondering want the typical academic profile of a recruited athlete to Stanford would be. I'm interested in a rough estimate of GPA, test scores, any extracurricular activities outside of their sport, etc.
I understand that every application is unique and there is not a definitive guideline, but I'm looking to see if there are any specific minimums, cut-offs, and anything else Stanford looks for when recruiting athletes (outside of being incredibly talented at his/her sport of course).
Any insight or knowledge is appreciated.
Thank you!
In addition, my school hasn't had a student accepted to Stanford in years, would this potentially impact my recruitment as an athlete at all?

Are acceptance rates higher for women interested in engineering?
I know that you are admitted as to the student body, not a major. However, does being a female with experience in STEM and planning on studying computer give an advantage in admissions?

Subject tests and other considerations for admission
I've currently taken 5 subject tests: Chem: 780, Math II: 770, Lit:740, US: 800, World 800.Would it help me significantly to take Bio-M If I would get a 780+? Also, Would it be worthwhile to retake Math and Chem to get an 800? I am in a bit of a weird situation because I received a 2.2 freshman year and have had a 3.9+ unweighted since (I also have a 35 with 11 on writing for the ACT), so would having a number of subject tests with high scores be useful? Also, how much of a hook is it to be related to a famous person? I am related to one of the more famous literary figures of the 20th century, and will probably write one of my essays about my involvement with his estate/ work.

Stanford Admissions
I was wondering what my chances are of getting into Stanford. I currently have a 4.7 gpa going into my senior year as well as a 1570 on my SAT. Also I have been rowing for 4 years ( I am 6 feet 4 inches), started 2 clubs at my school, and do many other extracurriculars. My AP scores are a 4, 4 and a 5. Lastly my sister is going to be attending Stanford as a junior.
