Hi everyone, I was previously an avid user of College Confidential in high school (formerly deb83r). I eventually was accepted into Stanford REA (in 2011) and matriculated in the same year. You can find my chance thread here if curious: https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1022392-chance-me-for-stanford-ea-one-last-time-p4.html
Attending Stanford was an amazing experience, but the college admissions process was very opaque and anxiety-inducing. Now that I've graduated, some of my fellow classmates are working to revolutionize the college admissions process. We're here to answer any questions that you have about the admissions process (or Stanford in particular). Feel free to post your questions here, message us directly, or email them to us at: collegeadmitresearch@gmail.com
Also, we'd love to get your input into the admissions process here, if you have time: https://qtrial2017q4az1.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b77wkpPfEamG59j
Thanks!

Why did so many accepted applicants in the 2021 RD decisions thread "not send" certain scores?
I though this was against the rules which are very strictly enforced. Is there an exception to this rule that I am not aware of? Because I have some very bad scores I would very much like to not send lol

Would I get into Stanford's medical field with these stats?
I have a 4.45 GPA and have got all 5's on my 8 AP exams. I got 1540 on my SAT, 34 on the ACT, I have 500 volunteering hours, and I also have 100 shadowing hours with people ranging from pediatricians to ER workers. Also, I created a non-profit that has raised 20,000 dollars for people with diabetes and lung cancer. Also, I went to Haiti for two weeks to medically help the community by calculating blood pressure, blood sugar, and even did a little suturing. Also, I am the leader of a Premedical association club in my school and am in two other clubs including HOSA and MUN. I also play Varsity soccer and the piano. I was hoping that all these medical aspects convey passion and determination, since I'm really committed towards the medical field.

Stanford and ECs
Hey guys!
So I had a quick questions about applying to Stanford and intended major. I have a ton of ECs and awards in Spanish, including placing first in national exams, being nominated for my state’s Governor’s honors program (hopefully will be attending) being a member of both Spanish club and soon national Spanish honors society and starting a volunteer based club with a Spanish teacher. On top of that I can get great reqs from multiple Spanish teachers and teachers in other subject areas. However I want to major in chemical engineering but still minor in Spanish. I’ve come to love chemistry and stem and I’ve gotten high As in all the chemistry, physics, and math classes my school offers (AP Chem, AP Physics 1, AP Calc AB/BC, etc...) however apart from national Math honors society, and a year or two of technology student association, I don’t have a lot of stem related ECs. I want to build my app for next year off of spanish because I heard When you apply, you apply to Stanford as a whole and major isn’t that important? Is this wise? Should I intend a Spanish major and switch majors later on?
Thanks!

Does Stanford's Performing Arts Major Require an Audition?
Title says it all. I haven't seen anything on an audition but just double checking.

Questions for current Stanford students:
Hi, I am in recent REA admit for Stanford's class of 2022 and I have a few questions for current students:
1) SLE: What is SLE like? What is the work load like? How are the SLE dorms? Can you take lots of other courses/ is there time for extracurriculars? What is the SLE community like? Are SLE students isolated/ are the stereotypes true? Do SLE students still go to parties and other events? How many essays are there each quarter? How are you examined? What is the grading like? (I know that there are many SLE threads, but most of the ones I found were from quite a few years ago).
2) Techie vs fuzzy: So far the majors that interest me most are Communications, Psychology, History, STS and Symbolic Systems. Do people look down on you for taking a communications/ History/ Psychology major? Is it hard to find internship opportunities with Communications/ History/ Psychology majors? For symbolic systems, how hard are the Maths and Computer Science classes? I find human- computer interaction/ cognitive science really interesting but I'm scared that I won't cope with the classes as I don't currently do computer science and am only doing AS level Maths. The most sciency/ technical A level course that I'm currently doing is Biology.
3) Studying abroad: I'm really interested in doing a semester in Oxford (maybe studying History/ Classics while I'm there). However, I've heard its really hard to get into- how hard is it to get into? I'm also interested in doing Stanford in New York (in the winter quarter for media or spring for the global city). How hard is it to get an internship there? What is the experience like?
4) Student life: What is a typical week/ weekend at Stanford like? Do people go to San Fransisco a lot/ how many times a year would someone go? Is the 'Stanford Bubble' true? What are the weirdest and most unique clubs/ societies? Do people go to Frat Parties a lot? Do people go to Palo Alto a lot? Are RAs strict?

Class Rank
I'm surfing threads and youtube videos and it seems most Stanford admits who report class ranks are in the top 1-2%, and more rarely the top 3-5%. I'm predicting my class rank will be 6-7%. Are there a substantial amount of people accepted from the bottom half of the top 10% (5-10%)? Stanford Stats only seem to suggest that ~95% of all admits are in the top 10%, but that gives me no clue if most of those 95% are also in the top 5%.
Thanks guys.

Do you have to be good in math to be a good CS programmer?
In other words, realistically can a kid who was just average in math and got around 650 - 690 in SAT math but 4.0 GPA be a good or decent Computer programmer? Basically, my kid was around middle of pack in his pre-calculus class. Probably not but was curious if you encountered a student who intended to major in languages, political science or non STEM major who got into Stanford and “accidentally” found out he or she was actually good in CS programming? I want to encourage my non STEM kid to still take an intro CS class at Stanford just to gain a basic understanding of CS even if he isn’t going to major in CS, but I don’t want him to flunk the class either. Lol

Are my chances at Stanford ruined?
Hello!
I am currently a junior and hope to apply to Stanford and several other prestigious schools next year. I am deeply interested in biology and although my extracurriculars aren't fully developed yet, I will be competing in renowned competitions such as USABO and Siemens, and I am also doing a cancer-related research project. However, there is one major flaw in my resume: last semester, I received a B in a biology course. I attend a highly rigorous school and this class is known to be one of the most difficult offered, but I still feel like this is inexcusable. Do I still have a shot at Stanford, Ivy Leagues or equivalents?
Also, quick question: Do colleges see +/-s on your transcript? I.e. is there a difference between an A and an A-?
Thanks!

Having Trouble knowing if I should apply
My school does gpa on a 100 point scale whereas everywhere that I look seems to talk about the 4.0 scale. If I have a 93 average overall at my school taking almost all of the hardest classes will this take me out of the running for admission?

Stanford Interviews in India
While there is a lot of information about Harvard/MIT/Other Ivy conducting interviews in India, I haven't heard anything about Stanford interviews. Does Stanford conduct interviews here? If so, how many students do they interview?

Question about Stanford optional update form for deferred students
Hi, quick question for anyone who knows- what is the word limit for the 3 update form questions for Stanford deferred applicants? I have not seen anywhere that says what the word limit is, and I want to know so I can write my responses on a google doc. Thanks!

Did you get an interview request? If so where are you.
I'll start: NY-had it last week. It went well

I did not receive any invite for the stanford interview(Jan 22, today), is it normal?

Does getting a Stanford Interview mean I am being considered?
I would expect that there is some sort of filtering system for who gets interviews or not. I don't think Stanford would bother asking an alumni to interview an applicant with zero chance of getting in. Some people in online forums say it is a good sign while others say it doesn't matter. Could someone with experience with Stanford interviews or someone attending Stanford answer this? Also some tips for the interview would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Time of Day for Stanford Admissions Decisions Release on Apr 1(Regular Action Class of 2022 Release)
Does anyone know about what time of day Stanford usually announces its admission decisions? If we know, we can save around a thousand dollars in airline tickets.
If you're curious as to why, keep reading. Otherwise, just let me know if you know the typical time. Thx!!!
Here's our situation: My son's school break is the last week in March, ending on April 1st. We're taking a family vacation to California during that time. We can only visit Stanford on the last day of the break (April 1st), due to other obligations in CA.
If Stanford usually announces its decisions in the early morning of April 1st, then it would be worth buying the more expensive afternoon/evening tickets to fly home (because if he finds out he got in, we could visit the campus that morning, or not visit it, accordingly). On the other hand, if Stanford doesn't announce its decision until, say, 11:59 pm on April 1st, we might as well just buy the cheaper, early morning tickets home on April 1st. It's true that we could just visit Stanford during the day on April 1st while not knowing if he got in, but then we'd visit the campus, take the expensive flight home, only to find out, "Guess what? You didn't get in," in which case we'd wish we'd bought the cheaper tickets, and come home earlier. (Either way, we're going to buy the tickets now. We just have to decide if we should buy the tickets for an early flight or a late flight.)

Stanford Account
I could have sworn I made an applicant portal but for some reason, it is not letting me login and I can't find the email. Who do I contact/has anyone else experienced this issue?

Only 2 Years of Foreign Languange
I only have 2 years of Spanish while Stanford recommends 3 or more, how will this affect my admissions chances/ will it hurt them? I have a 4.1 weighted GPA and hard classes fulfilling their other class recommendations. My hook and extracurriculars are stellar.
