I’ll give a detailed summary of my background to get the best advice. I’m a Somali girl from Minnesota. All throughout high school I’ve taken all honors and AP. My unweighted GPA is a 3.74 and an ACT score of 33. I’m interested in the medical field so throughout high school I volunteered at my local hospital’s ER room. I’ve clocked in about 300 hours there. My school has a HOSA program (health occupations student of America) and I’m the Vice President of it. I started a medical club at my school also and I’m the President of that. My electives are mostly medical related like human anatomy or health care core curriculum. I’ve been in band up until 11th grade. And I’ve been doing Spanish for 5 years also. Since sophomore year I’ve also started playing badminton. What do you think my chances are?

Weird thing about Stanford's transfer admissions
After visiting Silicon Valley for spring break, seeing all the startups and big companies, and visiting Stanford's campus, I really got interested in transferring to somewhere in the area. Pretty much the only place I can afford is Stanford, and I immediately became discouraged when I saw that 2% rate. But under further inspection, I noticed something very strange about their stats. From the most recent year available (2016) a QUARTER of their admissions came from people with under a 600 on SAT math, and another quarter was 600-699. As far as reading goes, an entire quarter was 600-699. Comparing that to Freshman admissions, only 30% had less than <700 on reading, and 22% <700 on math.
Does this mean that they weigh college GPA heavier? Or maybe extracurriculars?
As someone with a 1380 SAT (only took once so I could improve), 3.5 GPA, and (as humbly as possible) very good ECs, does this mean that I have a remote possibility? Or at least better than Freshman admission?

AP Calc BC
So if I take AP Calc BC my junior year, do I still have to take math my senior year? My dream school is stanford but I plan on taking another course instead of AP Stats

Has anyone received a letter from a particular department inviting the student to apply?
My child received a letter from a certain department at Stanford asking her to apply. She never considered applying there but decided to submit an application. We have not heard of anyone else getting a letter from a department head from any university.

Stanford Highschool GPA
I’m an HS senior who applied to Stanford RD, and I heard that Stanford does not take into account freshman year. Does anyone know whether Stanford looks more at weighted or unweighted gpa or both? Also, how would I calculate my gpa for Stanford? Would I add the average gpa’s of my two semester sophomore year and junior year with the first semester of my senior year and then find the average of those three numbers? Average sophomore year gpa about 4.17, average junior gpa about 4.225 ish and first semester senior year gpa about 4.48. Averaging all three numbers would be roughly a 4.3 gpa. Is this correct? Thanks a lot!

Graduate school at Stanford
Hey guys! I'm currently a first year majoring in pharmsci at UCI, but I want to someday get a PhD in environmental sciences at Stanford. My only problem is that I plan to go to grad school to get a Pharm D first, and then after 3 years of working, I would like to continue studying for a masters in environmental science and then maybe a doctoral degree. The problem is that I don't plan on majoring in environmental sciences at UCI, only minor since my schedule is really tight. I plan to stay a 5th year to finish my minor in environmental sciences, but I'm worried that won't be able to major in environmental sciences at graduate school of my choice if only I'm able to get masters/doctoral degree only if environmental sciences is my major. Is majoring in the field required? Is getting into Stanford for environmental sciences difficult?

Chance me
Hey guys, know this is a typical type of thread, but as a junior I just wanted to get a head start on the college process and see where I might consider applying to with a reasonable chance of admission.
Test Scores
SAT: 1600 (16 on the essay, not sure how I messed up that badly)
ACT: 36 (36 on all portions, 11/12 on the essay)
Subject tests: 800 math, 800 chem, going to take physics and bio and expect decent scores
Internships/work experience:
- Worked as marketing intern at local start-up for one summer, paid
- Shadowed at a mass spectroscopy lab for a summer
- Doing a coding/chemistry project with the same mass spec lab currently
Was accepted into the Garcia Research Scholar Program at Stonybrook University for this summer (Material sciences, more chemistry). Planning to attend
Projects:
- Submitted a paper to the Siemens Science Fair, didn't go anywhere
Extracurriculars:
- Vice President of DECA Club at school
- Vice president of National Honor Society at school
- President of chemistry club of local non-profit where we teach younger children
- National Science Bowl
- Science Olympiad
- ARML, AMC series, local math competitions
Awards
- Honor roll (top 150) at Chemistry Olympiad
- Qualified for national test last 3 years, highest score in state history this year on local test
- Qualified for AIME last 5 years, highest score is 8
- DECA State 1st place (Business Finance)
- Science Bowl 1st place in state, 7th at nats
- Various local math competition prizes (probably insignificant)
What do you guys think about Stanford, and perhaps more broadly about where I might consider?

NYU vs LSE
Hey, my friend got accepted to LSE (London School of Economics) and NYU for international relations. She knows that both these schools are great and is aware about the differences between the 2. She lives in the UK but is also half American so culture doesn’t bother her much.
Rankings wise, LSE tops NYU (3rd vs 21st respectively). Worldwide, LSE is maybe more prestigious/ respected (her parents really care about the name btw). However, she would like to know more about the course at both unis -she would be applying for the International Relations Honours Programme at NYU. Also, is the student/ teacher ratio similar for both unis? And is NYU as big on careers fairs/ internships/ research opportunities as LSE? Any info on any of this would really help.
However, the one downside of LSE is the student satisfaction/ lifestyle. There are many rumours about LSE being really really work-intensive so much so that people end up hating it. Does anyone know if it is really THAT bad at LSE. She knows that the American uni experience is a completely different story to UK uni experience, let alone LSE. But is there a lot of difference (lifestyle wise) between the 2?
She’s told me she prioritises academics, especially because her parents prefer she went to a “big name” school. Right now shes leaning towards LSE, purely because of the prestige, but if shes really gonna have a bad time at LSE is it worth going over NYU.
By the way, I am not saying NYU is more fun than LSE - it might well be the other way round. But if anyone has anything they know about any of the 2 unis it would be a great help. Thanks!!!

Stanford Class of 2023 RD Results
I didn’t see a thread like this for 2023 RD. I saw a lot of ppl post their results on the discussion thread, but it’d be nice to have a separate one so that future applicants don’t have to sift through hundreds of posts of us stressing out over the date change. Please also feel free to note a date change on your portal when filling this out, even though there doesn’t seem to be anything significant about it.

Is Stanford a good place to go for med school?
I'm interested in becoming a dermatologist, and I really want to go to Stanford. However, everyone keeps on talking about the business and engineering programs. I haven't heard anyone talk about the medical program. Would it be a better idea to go to another school?

Does doing a program run by a college while in high school increase likelihood of acceptance?
Hello CollegeConfidential,
I was recently accepted into the Stanford Reischauer Program for Japanese studies for my junior year. I was wondering whether completing this program would increase my likelihood of getting into Stanford as a college. Would it increase my chances of getting into other prestigious universities in general?
