Stanford to start new "residential neighborhoods"

In a major change for student housing, Stanford just announced that it will phase out its longstanding "Draw" system and instead create "residential neighborhoods." As a parent of a graduating senior, I am delighted to see this change and only wish it had been in place when my son matriculated. The current housing system, though not without its advantages, was a significant negative in my opinion, especially when compared with the residential college system at Yale (which my son almost chose). Stanford's new residential neighborhoods should go a long way toward creating the kind of community most students seek in their undergraduate years, and the fact that Stanford is making this change speaks volumes about its willingness to try new things. After being a part of the extended Stanford community for four years now as an interested parent, I've been increasingly impressed by this school, and the addition of residential neighborhoods will make Stanford about as "perfect" as any college or university can be. Below is part of the announcement; the full article is here: https://www.stanforddaily.com/2019/04/16/housing-draw-to-be-phased-out-students-to-be-assigned-to-neighborhoods-instead-resx-report-announces/ The elimination of The Draw and the creation of residential neighborhoods — to which all undergraduates will be assigned before their first year on campus — will characterize the changes revolutionizing residential life at Stanford over the next century, according to recommendations released by the ResX task force on Tuesday. Campus will be divided into 10 to 14 neighborhoods that group together existing dorm communities, giving them shared “facilities for learning, arts, recreation and dining.” Students will be “citizens” of these individual clusters for four years. Self-ops, co-ops, and Greek and Row houses will be subsumed into neighborhoods, along with ethnic theme dorms and other themed housing. Incoming frosh will be automatically assigned to all-frosh dorms unless they apply to live in a University Theme House (UTH) — including SLE, ITALIC, FroSoCo and the frosh-friendly ethnic theme houses. There will be no more than one UTH housing frosh in each neighborhood, and they will be located near their respective neighborhoods’ all-frosh dorms “where possible,” the report recommends. The report further suggested that Stanford limit students to only one year in a given UTH. Students will no longer be able to draw into UTHs — which include themed upper-class Row houses — and will instead be exclusively required to pre-assign. In lieu of The Draw, there will be a separate lotteries among the members of each class in each neighborhood, with seniors choosing first, then juniors and finally sophomores. Students who choose to relocate to a different neighborhood will be relegated to the “lowest priority” among members of their class to choose their housing assignment for t. Students with “approved concerns” such as Title IX issues will have the option to transfer neighborhoods without penalty through a separate process. “The system should encourage, but not require, students to stay within their neighborhood,” the report added.

"Stanford University expelled a female student on April 2 after lying about being a sailor and paying $500,000 to get admitted into the school. Amid the nation-wide college admissions scandal, Stanford University expelled a female student on April 2 who administrators said falsely claimed to be a sailor, boosting her acceptance into the school. According to the report released by the president and provost of Stanford, the student is no longer on campus. 'We determined that some of the material in the student’s application is false and, in accordance with our policies, have rescinded admission. Any credits earned have also been vacated,' the update said. ... ... 'We are preparing to launch a comprehensive external review of the procedures we follow in providing an Athletics Department recommendation for the admissions process, as well as the procedures around the acceptance of gifts for athletic programs, to ensure that we have strong controls and can reassure our constituents of the integrity of our processes,' the April statement said. The statement also said that a new system has already been put in place with members who are responsible for checking the credentials of student-athletes who have been 'proposed by a coach to receive athletic recommendation.'" ... https://palyvoice.com/148136/news/stanford-student-expelled-due-to-false-athletic-claims-picture-on-its-way/

Saying no to Stanford?

My daughter is trying to decide between Stanford (with no financial assistance) and a large state school (Alabama) with a full ride for being a National Merit Finalist. She fears that Stanford will be so academically challenging (and possibly "cut-throat" competitive) that she will have very little time to pursue other interests (club sports, volunteering, etc). She is also intimidated by the unknown roommate situation and the general quirkiness of the student body. On the other hand, clearly Stanford has the superior reputation and she feels she may not find Alabama challenging enough. Does anyone here have experience saying "no" to Stanford once admitted?

Hi everyone, I was recently admitted and will be attending Stanford in the fall! This post was created so that people (mostly future applicants and their parents), can ask for advice on the admissions process, what to include and what not to include, etc. Please note that anyone can answer / ask questions on this thread. Hopefully this will make the application process a lot easier for everyone

Does being a URM in my field matter?

Hi, I'm African American and I'm considering applying to apply for Chemical Engineering to Stanford REA for the Class of 2024. I'm aware that being a URM in general is a hook, however, does it boost my application that I'm specifically applying to Chemical Engineering where African Americans make up ~5% of the field(Source: ACS Diversity PDF)? If so, will that increase my chances for Stanford and other T20s?

Rescinded Acceptance

I got into Stanford University EA this fall. I have always maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school but this year I fear I might be getting a C or worse a D, on a class I'm taking at a community college (Differential Equations). The only reason why I'm getting a low grade is because my teacher keeps giving me F's on assignments counted as quizzes for the smallest things, like because the size of my paper was off by an inch or I didn't box the entirety of my answer. And honestly, I think he straight up just hates me. He always gives me dirty looks in class and does not help me at all after class. My grades for all my other classes are A+'s this semester but it's just that one class that keeps putting me through the wringer and I'm especially scared since math was my intended major but I'm planning to switch to comp sci. Do you think that they will rescind my application over one bad grade and if they do, is there anything I can do to change that?

Am I possibly a good fit for Stanford?

Hello my name is Angela. I recently applied regular decision to Stanford because I'm interested in their Psych program and is a great school that I thought to apply to see what happens. I'm from a low-income area where there's not a lot of opportunities laying around so I don't have any crazy research opportunities. Is it okay if I tell you guys my story along with extracurriculars and stats, get a glimpse to who I am as a person, to see if I would be a possible, good fit for Stanford?

Stanford/T10 Applicant for 2024 major question

I have moderately strong credentials in both engineering and history. I was wondering if I could apply as history or perhaps some mix of the fields like the science society and technology major at Stanford (hence Stanford in the title specifically) to improve my chances to be accepted? Then, later on, I would probably switch to a CS major, when officially declaring or as a change of college. Would this be effective to improve my chances of being accepted? I feel like my resume in history would be a little less than STEM, but the lesser competition may be worth it.

Waitlist depression :,(

I literally just won three awards today/tonight... two scholarships for [redacted] and [redacted].. and one award called the National [redacted] Award which is the highest honor for [redacted]... I honestly don't care much about awards at all because to me, in the real world, I'm just a stupid small fish with a lot more to learn... but I was so excited to finally be able to update Stanford with my accomplishments for my waitlist.. so FREAKING EXCITED... and then FIVE MINUTES AFTER I WIN THE AWARD and sit down.. I get the notification on my email that I WAS DROPPED FROM THE WAITLIST... IF I COULD JUST HAVE ONE MORE DAY I COULD HAVE UPDATED THEM..... AND MAYBE HAD A TINIER CHANCE AT ACCEPTANCE!!!!!!! Stanford was and still is the only school I really see myself enjoying. It has everything - from strong and CHALLENGING academics in the sciences and arts, to an AMAZING work-life balance, to a phenomenal support system, to WARM WEATHER, to literally a community of SUPER QUIRKY PEOPLE that are crazy interesting and all INSANELY PASSIONATE about what they do... I've visited colleges across the east coast and mid west... and I'm sorry but NO WHERE HAS THE SAME LEVEL OF PASSION AS STANFORD!!!!!!!!! I tried my best to be happy for the rest of the ceremony but to be honest, I am EXTREMELY disappointed in myself.. And I mean EXTREMELY. Admissions officers at Stanford voted on my application (TWICE because I'm legacy) and majority literally voted AGAINST accepting me, yet accepted many others. That is COMPLETE evidence that there is something WRONG with me.. something that others have that I don't..... and will probably NEVER HAVE!!!!! I have no words to express my disappointment in myself. :,( I'll NEVER GET OVER THIS!!!!!! :,( I'm so EXTREMELY depressed....
