High School Freshman advice?

H!i I'm a freshman in High School in the suburbs of Seattle and I would really like to go to Stanford. I know that it is a really difficult accomplishment, which is why I'm making sure to start now and do things in and out of school that I am not only interested in, but will help me in achieving this goal! So, I was wondering if you guys have any advice to give me, or if there are any cool out of school programs around the Cascade area that I might be interested in. Thanks! Some info: African American 1st Generation American (African) 1st Generation College Student (My whole family was born in East African except me so I don't think that it's right to write about it.) Classes so far (About is the hardest class load I could take; Python prerequisite of APCS) AP Human Geo PE Honors English Bio Algebra 2 Coding in python IB Spanish 3 (got 2 B's in Spanish- had a harsh grader) Clubs Wood Business SCAN(Save the Children Action Network) MSA(Muslim Student Association) Leaving Debate for MUN As you can see its not really anything special so I'm open to all advice!

Does stanford check your freshman year grades if you apply an early action?

Saying no to Stanford?

My daughter is trying to decide between Stanford (with no financial assistance) and a large state school (Alabama) with a full ride for being a National Merit Finalist. She fears that Stanford will be so academically challenging (and possibly "cut-throat" competitive) that she will have very little time to pursue other interests (club sports, volunteering, etc). She is also intimidated by the unknown roommate situation and the general quirkiness of the student body. On the other hand, clearly Stanford has the superior reputation and she feels she may not find Alabama challenging enough. Does anyone here have experience saying "no" to Stanford once admitted?

Stanford Parents Thread

I have seen other threads for parents for the various other CC universities; while I know that Stanford prides itself on being unique, I would like to start a similar thread for Stanford parents to share information and suggestions. Our daughter just announced her "official" commitment to Stanford tonight and we are planning on attending Admit weekend with her. Are there any other parents planning on going? For any of you who have attended in the past, what are the highlights? Any suggestions? Look forward to hearing from you all!

I didn’t see a thread like this for 2023 RD. I saw a lot of ppl post their results on the discussion thread, but it’d be nice to have a separate one so that future applicants don’t have to sift through hundreds of posts of us stressing out over the date change. Please also feel free to note a date change on your portal when filling this out, even though there doesn’t seem to be anything significant about it. Remove the "a" in the bold, size, and color of your decision. Community service that looks good to Stanford

I'm currently a sophomore in high school with great extracurriculars and leadership positions and a 3.7. I haven't extremely been involved in community service but I want into it because I do have an interest in helping people. For those who got into Stanford, what community service projects/ organizations were you committed to and what other events did you do surrounding that area?

Summer at Stanford

My daughter received a scholarship to attend the summer session at Stanford. What is the summer atmosphere like at Stanford? Are there many undergraduates that attend summer classes? We are from a small, rural farming community in North Dakota so this is going to be a huge change for her. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated.

Am I possibly a good fit for Stanford?

Hello my name is Angela. I recently applied regular decision to Stanford because I'm interested in their Psych program and is a great school that I thought to apply to see what happens. I'm from a low-income area where there's not a lot of opportunities laying around so I don't have any crazy research opportunities. Is it okay if I tell you guys my story along with extracurriculars and stats, get a glimpse to who I am as a person, to see if I would be a possible, good fit for Stanford?

Does doing a program run by a college while in high school increase likelihood of acceptance?

Hello CollegeConfidential,
I was recently accepted into the Stanford Reischauer Program for Japanese studies for my junior year. I was wondering whether completing this program would increase my likelihood of getting into Stanford as a college. Would it increase my chances of getting into other prestigious universities in general?

Hi everyone,

I was recently admitted and will be attending Stanford in the fall! This post was created so that people (mostly future applicants and their parents), can ask for advice on the admissions process, what to include and what not to include, etc.

Please note that anyone can answer / ask questions on this thread. Hopefully this will make the application process a lot easier for everyone :)

Stanford University Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

Dear fellow prospective Stanford transfer students,

I recently finished my freshman year at the University of Connecticut as an Economics major. I earned a 3.6 GPA with a relatively rigorous courseload. I applied as a transfer student to Wharton but was rejected.

I will start with a few stats:

Race: Caucasian Jewish American

Gender: Male

Home State: Connecticut

SES: High

SAT: 1020 (Terrible. I took the SAT once a couple years ago and did not study at all. I will be retaking.)

I feel stagnant at my current school and will likely be taking a gap year for 2018/2019 to do something extreme. I am leaving to study abroad in Israel soon, so I may stay there.

At any rate, I wanted to start this thread as early as possible to get the conversation going. I do not expect much activity during summer break, so I am looking forward to conversations with other prospective transfer students this fall.

Good luck to everyone in advance.

Sincerely,

@mgr001

Stanford/T10 Applicant for 2024 major question

I have moderately strong credentials in both engineering and history. I was wondering if I could apply as history or perhaps some mix of the fields like the science society and technology major at Stanford (hence Stanford in the title specifically) to improve my chances to be accepted? Then, later on, I would probably switch to a CS major, when officially declaring or as a change of college. Would this be effective to improve my chances of being accepted? I feel like my resume in history would be a little less than STEM, but the lesser competition may be worth it.

Waitlist depression :,(

I literally just won three awards today/tonight... two scholarships for [redacted] and [redacted].. and one award called the National [redacted] Award which is the highest honor for [redacted]... I honestly don't care much about awards at all because to me, in the real world, I'm just a stupid small fish with a lot more to learn... but I was so excited to finally be able to update Stanford with my accomplishments for my waitlist.. so FREAKING EXCITED... and then FIVE MINUTES AFTER I WIN THE AWARD and sit down.. I get the notification on my email that I WAS DROPPED FROM THE WAITLIST... IF I COULD JUST HAVE ONE MORE DAY I COULD HAVE UPDATED THEM..... AND MAYBE HAD A TINIER CHANCE AT ACCEPTANCE!!!!!!!

Stanford was and still is the only school I really see myself enjoying. It has everything - from strong and CHALLENGING academics in the sciences and arts, to an AMAZING work-life balance, to a phenomenal support system, to WARM WEATHER, to literally a community of SUPER QUIRKY PEOPLE that are crazy interesting and all INSANELY PASSIONATE about what they do... I've visited colleges across the east coast and mid west... and I'm sorry but NO WHERE HAS THE SAME LEVEL OF PASSION AS STANFORD!!!!!!!!!

I tried my best to be happy for the rest of the ceremony but to be honest, I am EXTREMELY disappointed in myself.. And I mean EXTREMELY. Admissions officers at Stanford voted on my application (TWICE because I'm legacy) and majority literally voted AGAINST accepting me, yet accepted many others. That is COMPLETE evidence that there is something WRONG with me.. something that others have that I don't..... and will probably NEVER HAVE!!!!! I have no words to express my disappointment in myself. :,( I'll NEVER GET OVER THIS!!!!!! :,( I'm so EXTREMELY depressed....
