I got into Stanford University EA this fall. I have always maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school but this year I fear I might be getting a C or worse a D, on a class I'm taking at a community college (Differential Equations). The only reason why I'm getting a low grade is because my teacher keeps giving me F's on assignments counted as quizzes for the smallest things, like because the size of my paper was off by an inch or I didn't box the entirety of my answer. And honestly, I think he straight up just hates me. He always gives me dirty looks in class and does not help me at all after class. My grades for all my other classes are A+'s this semester but it's just that one class that keeps putting me through the wringer and I'm especially scared since math was my intended major but I'm planning to switch to comp sci. Do you think that they will rescind my application over one bad grade and if they do, is there anything I can do to change that?

H!i I'm a freshman in High School in the suburbs of Seattle and I would really like to go to Stanford. I know that it is a really difficult accomplishment, which is why I'm making sure to start now and do things in and out of school that I am not only interested in, but will help me in achieving this goal! So, I was wondering if you guys have any advice to give me, or if there are any cool out of school programs around the Cascade area that I might be interested in. Thanks!

Some info:
African American
1st Generation American (African)
1st Generation College Student
(My whole family was born in East African except me so I don't think that it's right to write about it.)

Classes so far
(About is the hardest class load I could take; Python prerequisite of APCS)
AP Human Geo
PE
Honors English
Bio
Algebra 2
Coding in python
IB Spanish 3
(got 2 B's in Spanish- had a harsh grader)

Clubs
Wood Business
SCAN(Save the Children Action Network)
MSA(Muslim Student Association)
Leaving Debate for MUN

As you can see its not really anything special so I'm open to all advice!

Stanford Parents Thread

I have seen other threads for parents for the various other CC universities; while I know that Stanford prides itself on being unique, I would like to start a similar thread for Stanford parents to share information and suggestions.

Our daughter just announced her "official" commitment to Stanford tonight and we are planning on attending Admit weekend with her. Are there any other parents planning on going? For any of you who have attended in the past, what are the highlights? Any suggestions?

Look forward to hearing from you all!

I didn’t see a thread like this for 2023 RD. I saw a lot of ppl post their results on the discussion thread, but it’d be nice to have a separate one so that future applicants don’t have to sift through hundreds of posts of us stressing out over the date change. Please also feel free to note a date change on your portal when filling this out, even though there doesn’t seem to be anything significant about it.

Community service that looks good to Stanford

I'm currently a sophomore in high school with great extracurriculars and leadership positions and a 3.7. I haven't extremely been involved in community service but I want into it because I do have an interest in helping people. For those who got into Stanford, what community service projects/ organizations were you committed to and what other events did you do surrounding that area?

Summer at Stanford

My daughter received a scholarship to attend the summer session at Stanford.

What is the summer atmosphere like at Stanford?

Are there many undergraduates that attend summer classes?

We are from a small, rural farming community in North Dakota so this is going to be a huge change for her. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated.

How to Get Into Stanford....By Someone Who Didn't

Introduction

I wanted to go to Stanford since I was eleven years old. Since the day I set foot on Stanford's campus, I studied my butt off in high school, did what I was passionate about, wrote and edited my Stanford essays years before I even applied, did killer extracurricular activities, and burned myself getting good standardized test scores. I read every blog possible and watched every YouTube video about how to get into Stanford. I was confident I would also get in, but not too confident, because I knew the acceptance rate.

I never really thought about getting a rejection letter.

For years, I compiled my thoughts about applying to Stanford into several Google Docs. After my rejection, I've been reviewing what worked, what didn't, and how I would've changed my application to get in. I'm a lot wiser now, a lot more aware about the things I should've done, and less blind to what accepted Stanford students told me I needed to do.

Standardized Testing: the Thing that Matters Least

I knew this even while applying, but for some applicants it really hasn't hit them yet. Tests don't matter. Nor do they in life. As long as you have 700+s in each section of the SAT, or subject SAT, you're fine. If you have high 600s, you'll be okay if you're low-income or a minority (black, hispanic, or an underrepresented Asian like Vietnamese). You'll notice that accepted students on the internet who post "Got Into Stanford With Low _____" are a minority. And that's OK. Stanford and schools in general need diversity, and historically minorities have been oppressed so they can't pay to get top-notch levels of education or retake SATs to get higher scores. But I'm speaking the truth and the reality: you need above 700s if you're not a minority to be accepted. Very, very, very rare circumstances may be otherwise.

If you're wondering what my scores were, you really shouldn't be concerned. Because again, all were above 700s. But, for those who care a bit too much: 1520 SAT (770M/750R), 780 Molecular Biology. On my application, I wrote that my race was White (Middle Eastern). If you were rejected and all your scores were above 700s, then you were rejected for a reason other than your scores…

Will my GPA keep my out of Stanford?

Hi! I didn’t do so well starting High School (hence my stats) but I know Stanford doesn’t look at Freshman year grades when your GPA is recalculated (GOD BLESS). My stats aren’t perfect but I’d like to know if they could be the sole reason I get denied (disregarding test scores, extracurriculars, awards, recommendations) Thanks!

Freshman Year (Not Included):
First Semester: 3.0
Second Semester: 2.1

Sophomore Year (Included):
First Semester: 3.0
Second Semester: 4.0

Junior Year (5 APs) (Included):
First Semester: 4.0
Second Semester: 4.0

Stanford GPA : 3.77
Stanford GPA Weighted : 4.23

Additional Question: Would it be better for me to apply as a Chemical Engineering major or undecided? My credentials point towards me having a strong interest in Chemistry so applying with that major would make sense, but I'm really not sure I want to study it in college

Which letter of recommendation should I go with? (Stanford)

Hello all,
Surprise surprise, another student wanting to go to Stanford. Thought I'd shoot my shot. I just turned 19, looking to transfer as a junior. Anyhow, I have 2 very nice letters of recommendation. Both writers know me equally well and both letters bring about the same to the table. The only difference is who wrote them, I can't decide which one would carry the most weight. Both are brilliant individuals so it's giving me a hard time. One of them is a high ranking NASA employee who I have worked with for about 3 years, he went to Purdue, I was an intern and then a project manager. The other letter is from a Stanford alumni, was the project manager of the team that invented Bluetooth, now works as a high-up at Apple. He was my mentor when I first got started working leadership/management positions at clubs in my high school and we are still talk very often.
Any input, whatsoever, would be amazing!

Have an amazing day!!!

Mechanical Engineering vs Human Biology at Stanford

$

I will be a senior this fall in high school, and I am planning on applying to Stanford REA.
I saw on Stanford's website that there is still a pretty significant gender gap in mechanical engineering, so I was wondering if I would have a better chance of getting accepted if I applied for ME vs hum bio, and then switch to hum bio if I get accepted.
I took AP Calculus BC in 10th grade, ended AP Physics Mechanics with a 98 and a 5 on the AP exam, and will be taking AP Physics E&M and multivariable calculus next year. On the other hand, I only ended AP Biology with a 93.
But, one of my main ECs is a biology lab internship, and I did get a 800 on the biology SAT.
Which major do you think will give me the biggest chance of getting accepted?

How I was Rejected Then Accepted by Stanford

Hi Guys,
I was admitted REA to Stanford and will be attending this fall. Go Cardinals!
Although, I am now attending my dream school. It wasn’t always this way. In 2017, I received rejections from the Ivy League, Stanford and Cambridge universities. By changing my applications and deciding to study something different, I was able to reapply and receive acceptances to Stanford and Cambridge. This direct experience has taught me what EXACTLY can get you rejected and what can maximize your chances of acceptance.

If you have any college admissions-related questions, ask away. I hope this creates a forum for sharing tips, anyone can answer a question or ask one.
Looking forward to seeing your questions!
