Hello everyone! Are there any Stanford alumni who know about Stanford's biology program? Especially in the marine biology area?
↧
Does anyone have some information on Stanford's biology program?
↧
Is Stanford within reach for me? (Elaborated below)
Hello! I am a soon to be senior and recently I've gotten more involved in trying to figure out where I want to go to college. I have researched a lot and Stanford is the university that has caught my eye. I am extremely interested in not only the physical location but also the holistic approach Stanford takes to try and create such a diverse community. I feel that the community that has been established is very appealing and would make for an amazing college experience.
However, upon watching many "how I got in" videos I quickly became extremely discouraged with my set of extracurriculars. I spend a lot of time with music (my main passion besides biology), but don't hold many leadership roles. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me advice (the good and the bad) on how my perspective application looks.
Stats:
SAT- 1530; 740 RW 790 Math
ACT- 34
GPA- 4.41 Weighted and 3.97 unweighted
SAT II- (I am taking them August but will provide preliminary practice test scores; I hope to raise them all by the time I take them)
Math II- 780, Bio 760, Chem 730
Rank- Top 1% 5/660
AP Classes- AP Human Geo (5), AP Physics 1 (3), AP World History (4), AP Pysch (5), AP Macro Econ (TBD), AP Span (TBD)
AP Tests w/o class- Stats (TBD), UPUSH (TBD), Eng Lang (TBD)
IB Classes- IB Spanish SL (TBD), IB ITGS SL (TBD)
Senior Course load- Orch, AP Chem, AP Physics 2, IB Bio HL, IB Eng IV HL, IB HOA HL, IB Math HL, IB ToK, AP Gov
Awards/Honors- Country Club Optimists District Essay Contest Winner, Texas Music Scholar Award (last 3 yrs), AP Scholar w/ honors, First Divisions at local and State Solo and Ensemble (last 3 yrs)
Extracurriculars/Volunteer:
Varsity Symphony Orchestra (I put most of my time and effort into this one. Along with practicing every day for the class, I also prepare for solo and ensemble, UIL competitions, the local All region orchestra, and string ensemble which is only before school and requires an audition. I am a first violin which is the upper violin section. However, I hold no formal leadership positions. 9th-12th grade)
Private Violin Lessons (Along with everything above, I have additional repertoire to practice for my weekly meeting with my violin teacher. I have been with her since 5th grade)
Secretary of NHS (10-12th grade; I meet the volunteer requirement with misc activities than the ones listed below such as playing Messiah at a church at Christmas time)
Spring and Summer musicals (I play the violin for the musicals and my school and district; I have held the loose position of "pit manager" where I helped set up and clean up stands and chairs. I was also in charge of poster design for this year's spring musical before COVID. 9th-12th grade )
Musical Ensemble Club (I am co-principle (top players) violinist for this club; we rehearse once a week after school and do 2-4 concerts a year at 3-4 nursing homes; I designed and update the website; 10th-12th grade) *i don't know if it makes a difference but I did not use Weebly and instead created it from scratch using Dreamweaver*
Marching Band (I play in my school marching band. I hold no leadership positions but it is very time-consuming requiring an immense amount of practice and rehearsal. There are many whole day competitions and we go to every football game)
Volunteer with Saint Vincent De Paul and a local food distribution organization (I put them together since they often overlap; I perform various secretarial duties such as minutes, writing letters, food drive prep, and participate in food drive when I can 10-12th. Roughly 90 hours, I am estimating since I haven't kept track)
Volunteered at a hospital (I got 70 hours at a hospital; 10th grade)
Volunteer at local clinic (This is where I am volunteering this summer)
Future Doctors of America (11th-12th grade; no leadership positions
but I am very interested in medicine)
Finally, I was planning on starting a club last year, but it fell through due to COVID. I hope to start it this upcoming year. It would be an organization where students interested in science can meet to discuss various controversial and groundbreaking science news. We would also perform various experiments to allow students to see multiple fields of science in a hands-on way. This would eventually lead to visits to local elementary and middle schools where we would give demonstrations to get students excited about science.
Summer:
I mostly do the volunteering mentioned above as well as work at my father's office. I do test prep (lol). As for hobbies, I try to look at a new instrument every summer to see what is out there as well as spend a lot of time gardening and reading science literature for fun, not for a class(chemistry books, anatomy and physiology, etc.) I have been working on my extended Essay and IA's for my HL classes
I don't have any complete essays or letters of rec yet but have 3 people in mind (1 Stem, 1 Humanities, and 1 art (my private teacher).
Thank you for any advice you can give! I understand that a large portion of admissions is just how your reader resonates with your essays and maybe even partially just luck. I know that even though Stanford is the dream, I shouldn't be crushed by a rejection letter as there are many more opportunities available. Thank you again!
If you have any questions or want me to elaborate on anything feel free to ask.

Chance Me For Stanford REA
Hello, I am a rising Junior from a decently competitive schools (10 people to T20s), and I am thinking of applying to Stanford REA. I know Stanford rejects a lot of applicants in its early round and heavily favors hooked applicants, so is it even worth applying early?
Demographics: Asian Male from Ohio, income > 400k
Intended Major: Symbolic Systems
Stats: 3.98 UW (4.0 on Stanford scale), 4.6 W, 36 ACT
Subject Tests: Math II(800), Physics(800)
APs: Psychology(5), CSP(5), CSA(5), APUSH(5), Gov(4), Macro(5), Micro(5), Calc BC(5), Physics 1(5), Physics 2(5), Physics C: Mechanics(5), Physics C: E&M(5), English Lang(5), Stats(5), Chemistry(5)
College Courses at T20: Calc 3(A), Calc 4(A), Probability(A)
ECs:
Chess Club: President, played for 10 years, won various state titles, certified master, taught at many schools, organized tournaments in school, volunteered in camps.
Debate: Senior Captain, done for 7 years, invitational and regional awards, extemporaneous speaking, taught younger students.
Business Startup: Founder and CEO, sports sharing social media platform, organized development team, legalized, full stack developer in Python and IOS app developer, in beta phase.
Physics Club: Vice President, helped prepare students for the annual physics bowl competition, studied Mechanics/E&M/Optics/Thermodynamics/Modern Topics.
Physics Organization: Founder and Executive Director, hosted physics competitions for students to make up for the lack of physics opportunity, allowed schools to register chapters, hundreds of students and 10+ registered schools across the US and Canada.
Math Volunteering Organization: COO, registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, spreads STEM in local schools, partnered with local university, in a decent amount of schools and taught a lot of younger students.
Physics Research: Machine learning in quantum mechanics research with professor at T20, used machine learning to do DFT calculations in order to approximate properties of a crystal structure based off of its crystal defects, not published yet (hopefully soon).
Business Club: Committee Member, competed in economics and finance related events, placed for various events at the state level and qualified for nationals.
Tennis: Varsity
Math Honor Society: Participate in math competitions such as state competitions and AMC, placed in various math competitions (nothing special), ARML competitor.
Awards (kept vague):
Top 20 in some international physics competition (not insanely prestigious tho).
State chess champion for K-12.
Placed nationally in statistics competition.
Some state math competition award.
Qualified for national for financial math in business club
Recommendation Letters:
Counselor (8/10)
Physics Teacher (10/10, done all 4 physics APs, very good in class, talked to teacher a lot)
Latin Teacher (9/10, had for 4 years, did research project on philosophy with him, very close)
So, I think I have a pretty clear STEM tilt, but obviously it is not going to be good enough to rely on in order to get into Stanford REA. I have always done a lot of social science classes and I think it is smart to portray myself as somebody who is good in STEM but also very interested in philosophy (I have read a lot of philosophy, and did a philosophy project with my Latin teacher). My essays mainly focus on my world view of combining philosophy and physics to construct meaning in obscure things, and I think they are really unique. I am also thinking of doing Symbolic Systems if I go to Stanford, so I think highlighting my philosophy/psychology learning in combination with physics is a good idea for that.
I am also getting my Latin teacher to write a separate letter just for Stanford in which he highlights my philosophy project and mentions that I am a good fit for the Symbolic Systems program at Stanford. Idk how much that will help tho.
Conclusion: I am trying to carve out a niche as an Asian who is strong in STEM but also very interested in subjects like philosophy and psychology. This should come through in my essays and my recommendation letters. So, do you think I have a shot as an unhooked applicant at Stanford REA, or should I EA/ED to a different school?

Do I have a chance?
After researching for several weeks for my 'ideal' major, I've found my profound love for "human behavioural biology". It is what I plan on majoring in after watching professor Robert Sapolsky's lectures for hours. My interest in that field has grown so much to the point that I know for a fact that this is what I want to pursue. And with the growth of my interest in that field came my increasing love for Stanford's system. I plan on applying to it as my first choice, but I'd like to know what are my chances and how I can boost my resume and application to stand out.
(If you have any suggestions to improve my application as an International student, please tell me about them.)
I've maintained a GPA of 4.0 throughout high school.
I took 5 external exams in 10th grade (IGCSE English, Math, Biology, Arabic, and Computer science and scored 4A*s and 1 A)
In 11th grade, I took 11 external exams however none of the marks is released yet.
My extracurriculars are:
Gymnastics (I've won gold, silver, and bronze medals)
Volleyball (made it to the official team and competed nationally and won 3rd place)
Science fair (levitated a coil using eddy currents and scored a 4.2/5 winning 2nd place)
Shadow Academic Quality Controller
Shadow teacher for 7 subjects
Mentor
(I conducted extra classes on my weekends for students who struggle academically or need help in certain areas every week but due to corona I had to resort to video calls)
I started a project I'm extremely passionate about with my best friend. We are creating a website that offers academic help for students who are struggling with online classes (it can be used by anyone even after regular classes start once again). The reason I was motivated to start building this website is that every day, I see people giving up on trying to attend the college they've always dreamt of or the major they wanted to pursue. I saw potential being thrown away on a daily basis. After researching and asking multiple people, I found out that the main reason they were giving up was due to their low self-esteem levels. They felt that they were no longer competent enough due to their hard time focusing and learning from online classes.
The site I am currently building won't only provide academic support, but it will also provide motivational and emotional support to those who feel broken and can't continue (and later on this year I plan on starting a blog where we promote equality, social harmony, self-acceptance, and self-love). (I plan on doing so by adding a motivational section and an anonymous section where people can discuss what's on their mind without being known and in turn we will respond and provide the maximum support we can. I've also created official social media sites where people can text us if there is something they need to see through or just simply want a more private talk about). I plan on carrying on with this project even after graduation and I will diversify the site's content. This is because I believe that everyone has the potential to succeed and a voice that deserves to be empowered and heard. This is a big lifetime project which I am very excited about.
Thank you for your time and patience.

Should I attend TASP or Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies?
Here's the thing: Stanford is my absolute dream school. And I feel like attending their summer pre-collegiate programs would definitely demonstrate my interest in their school. Plus I've heard that many attendees end up actually getting into Stanford (def not sure if it's true bc i'm pretty sure the summer program isn't that selective but a lot of ppl have said this). I already got into their summer program and I'm waiting to hear back from TASP. I know TASP is more prestigious but if I end up getting into both, which should I choose?

Can my research mentor write a separate note to the admissions office?
I've worked on two research projects as a high schooler at Stanford, both in different depts. Both of my mentors are professors, and I worked very closely with them. Stanford, however, says that they will only accept a maximum of 1 additional Letter of Rec. How could my second mentor support my application? Would it be allowed if they dropped off a short note of support in-person at the admissions office? Is there a better way to do this?

Stanford SCEA -- influence of Cameron Impact Finalist?
Hi, all.
As a rising senior, I'm finalizing my list of colleges to apply to, and I've been heavily considering Stanford SCEA, but am attempting to fairly gauge whether I'd actually have a chance or not.
Mainly, I was wondering how influential being a Finalist for the Cameron Impact Scholarship would be in the ultimate decision. To be clear, I have not been named a Finalist and I plan on applying RD for the award this year, but I was wondering if anyone knew -- do most AO's at Stanford and other colleges already recognize the prestige of something like a Finalist for the Cameron Impact Scholarship? And if so, is being a Finalist for something this major essentially a congratulations/very high chance at Stanford?
For reference, the Cameron Impact Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship given to extraordinary students for community leadership and academic excellence. The program has a <4% acceptance rate for Finalists, and <1% for Recipients. I'm wondering if being named a Finalist is essentially a lock for something like Stanford, and if not, how much influence it could have.
Any help is appreciated, I'm just trying to understand the process better.
(Again, not a Finalist (not yet!), but I can hope!)

Submission of art porfolio
I'm an international student applying early decision to Stanford. I am applying for physics but theater is something that I'm really passionate about and I have spent a lot of time and effort on it. Since it plays a huge role in my application, should i submit an art portfolio or should i just shape one of my essays around theater?

AP/A LEVEL CREDIT
I was looking into the AS/A level requirements for Stanford University, and found out that only subjects that receive AP credit are eligible to receive credit, which would make one of my AS/A level courses ineligible for credit. Can someone please confirm whether this is true?. I take my A level exams in May/June of 2021, Would it be preferable for me to sign up for some AP exams in place of these A levels?. I have taken 4 SAT subject tests, should I just use these scores along with my high school GPA when applying to college?

Chance at Stanford REA?
Hi, all. Just wondering if I could get any second opinions on my chances at Stanford REA. My main concern is my grades.
GPA (UW): 3.88, Weighted: 4.6 (15 AP courses, all 4's and 5's)
SAT/SAT II's: N/A (hoping corona won't cancel September & October)
Main EC's:
• Founded a nonprofit for marine sustainability; received grants to expand organization's reach internationally; won a few national awards for work (including a Gloria Barron Prize)
• Filmed a short documentary about social issues important to me; film has been accepted and screened at over 20 film festivals and featured on PBS
• Captain of my school's varsity track team
• Co-founded social entrepreneurship club at my high school, which is now the largest club in the entire school
• Run a personal blog (not much to say here, but I just like to do it)
• Conduct research with a professor on principles of business and its applications in the nonprofit realm
Overall, I feel as though my EC's and awards are pretty strong, and my connecting line is that I truly love to create things (nonprofits, films, etc.) that give smaller voices a podium to enact change. Any second thoughts would be nice, though.

Can you get into Stanford with a 3.5 UW GPA?
I know I know many of you are probably thinking "is this kid joking?? single hardest school to get into and you're asking about a 3.5"
Here's the dealio: I know my chances are slim. I know they are slimmer than slim. I even heard that students (who aren't recruited athletes) that have GPAs below a 3.7 have an even lower chance of getting accepted (like 1% apparently). But say, in the BEST POSSIBLE scenario, I have a stellar application otherwise. Say I have a great 1500 range SAT score, mindblowing essays, and amazing extracurrics (def not saying i have all of these things, we're just imagining here ok)--AND THE ONLY THING I DON'T HAVE GOING FOR ME IS A HIGH GPA because I've gotten multiple Bs and am not even top 10% of my class in terms of grades. The thing is, in comparison to the kids at my school (they're the straight-A only does things to look good to colleges and aren't that passionate type of ppl), my grades aren't great but I feel like my extracurrics & awards are farther up there than most of them in that regard.
Would my subpar, wildly mediocre, even maybe even POOR grades (in comparison to other applicants) play a significant role in holding back the admission officers?
Please don't hate on this question, I realize that what I'm asking is kind of unbelievable and even naive but I'm genuinely wondering.
